DVB-SH     DVB-Satellite services to Handhelds

DVB approves DVB-SH specification Feb. 2007

DVB-SH system --> IP based media content and data to handheld terminals via satellite

handheld terminals: mobile phones, PDAs or other receiving equipment

Frequencies below 3 GHz, S-Band. 2,0 - 3,5 GHz

Coverage area:
Satellite: wide area
Terrestrial network: will be used if reception of satellite is not possible (line of sight between terminal and satellite is missing ---> terrestrial gap fillers)

Two operational modes:

It complements the existing DVB-H physical layer standard and like its sister specification (DVB-H) uses the DVB IP Datacast (IPDC) set of content delivery, electronic service guide and service purchase and protection standards.

DVB-SH features: turbo coding for forward error correction and a highly flexible interleaver in an advanced system designed to cope with the hybrid satellite/terrestrial network topology.
